To compliment my Probabilistic Forecasting Tool I created a Probabilistic Roadmap Tool. The Roadmap Tool was designed with three things in mind. First, to make it simple to create and update data driven graphical roadmaps. Second, allow those roadmaps to be probabilistic in nature so they reflect more real world scenarios. Third, allow the individual team roadmaps to be aggregated into one or more master roadmaps to provide portfolio and organization level views.

Roadmaps are created by simply entering a few basic data elements into a table for each roadmap item and then updating the roadmap from the menu. The tool allows you to enter optimistic and pessimistic durations and probabilities along with dependencies between other roadmap items within your team or with teams in other roadmap spreadsheets. The tool will calculate the optimistic and pessimistic probabilities and dates based on the dependencies and reflect them in the roadmap.

Resulting Probabilistic Roadmap

Roadmaps can be configured to work like more traditional deterministic roadmaps as well.

Deterministic Roadmap

Individual team roadmaps can be aggregated together in a master roadmap to provide portfolio/organizational level views.

Portfolio Probabilistic Roadmap

The tool also provides fairly extensive configuration to allow you to control the aesthetics of your roadmaps.

Configuration Options

The tool is fully documented and there are two example roadmap sets to demonstrate the usage:

Comments and suggestions area always welcomed and encouraged.
